Airfix 1:72 Hawker Typhoon Mk Ib, RB396

Produced in partnership with Airfix, this new kit details Hawker Typhoon MkIb, RB396, as she would have looked during her combat career in early 1945. She flew at least 36 combat sorties (verified by logbooks and ORBs) and was hit by flak on eighteen occasions, finally force landing on 1st April 1945 and recovered for scrap after the war. She is under rebuild to airworthy status, with proceeds raised from these kits helping that cause.

The alternative scheme is that of Wg Cdr Johnny Baldwin, the highest scoring Typhoon “ace” of WWII with fifteen and one shared “kills”, all of which were while flying the Typhoon.

Product info

By 1943, the RAF needed a dedicated ground attack fighter and the Typhoon was suited to the role. The powerful engine allowed the aircraft to carry a load of up to two 1,000lb (454kg) bombs. From September 1943, Typhoons could also be armed with four, eight or, in some cases, even 12 “60lb” RP-3 rockets.
